Dawn grew up in Brooklyn, New York into a family of artists, where at a very young age, had a penchant for art and the drive to see it move forward. Long prior to entering college, Dawn was awarded in several statewide contests for her work, and was later featured at the Museum of Modern Art and The Lever House in New York City. She ultimately received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she graduated in the top ten.
While at SVA, against the earnest requests of her art professors, Dawn decided to change majors and undertake a career in advertising as an art director. Unfortunately, she became extremely successful and sought after in the field. This meant her fine art career would inevitably be put on hold for roughly 13 years. Despite working in a predominantly male industry, Dawn continued to demonstrate her creative prowess by having success after success. Her ability to creatively tackle a myriad of creative projects has enabled her to work at the heavily demanding pace of world-class agencies throughout New York City.
She’s won an innumerable amount of advertising awards on high profile accounts such as Reebok, Virgin Atlantic Airways, MTA, Celebrity, Canon, and American Express to name a few, ranging from Clios to C.A. to Addys Best of Show.
Dawn’s love for eclecticism in the arts is made evident in her work when viewing the broad ranges of techniques, applications and subject matter she employs in her drawings and paintings. Everything from loose sketches to highly detailed pencil renderings to her less refined oil pastels, has created a refreshingly unpredictable gallery. Her affinity for nature and the human form becomes unmistakable, as well.
She claims that what defines her style, is that she freely adopts none. When and where she’s moved by something ultimately dictates the temperament of her pieces, as does her love for experimentation with execution. She opts for the unpredictability of each piece over the staidness of approaching something by rote. Never intimidated by a challenge, she views what others might see as creative obstacles as an opportunity to approach something in a completely unanticipated manner.
Being multifarious and creatively prolific has led Dawn to pursue a gamut of other creative endeavors. She still does art direction on a freelance basis, has created and sells her own line of children’s hand sewn shirts, is passionate about taking beautiful photographs, and has currently started her own interior design business called Homegirls (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Homegirls/435107943206153?ref=br_rs)and a custom painted chair company with fellow artist,Doug Anderson called ChairVandals.com
Often referred to as Renaissance woman, Dawn will continue to openly explore and undertake challenges in the art field that demonstrates her passion for so many things.
Dawn has lived in Soho, New York City most of her life and is presently living in Westport, CT. She has two talented sons, many pets, and an insatiable appetite for whatever comes her way.
